Marriage

Marriage is like a tree;

I like what I see when the leaves blow

In the wind.

While the trunk stays grounded and immovable.

Marriage is like a tree;

Steady as the trunk,

Like on the day I said, “I do.”

Immovable yet as delicate as the leaves

Cracking at the sharpness of the words – I mean,

Wind.

That can spin and spin until I find myself in the eyes

Of your storm.

Marriage is like a tree;

Roots run deep, intertwined with one another

Reaching for the same food;

The Bread of Life. And sunlight.

We spend more time together, intertwined in this

Divine Covenant; and as my beauty vanishes,

I’ll laugh with you because beauty comes and goes like the changing colors of the leaves.

What kept you to me, and me to you all this time,

Was not in the strength of the trunk, nor in the fragility of the leaves…protecting.

But in the roots hidden beneath the earth’s surface

Combining our purposes;

Remaining and uniting.
